Scholarships
The Max Benjamin Kolb Endowed Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Max B. Kolb,
an undergraduate student at Hofstra who demonstrated a unique enthusiasm and aptitude for film
studies. The Scholarship is awarded in the form of cash grants to deserving undergraduate Film
Studies and Production majors, to help defray film production costs in selected courses in the major.
The Kolb family wanted to encourage future generations of Hofstra students to pursue film studies in the
School of Communication. They knew that the out-of-pocket costs of producing even short student films
could be substantial. By providing cash grants to reimburse students for these costs, the aim of the
Scholarship program is to help assure that financial considerations will not be a hindrance to
students who are seriously pursuing film studies.
The Scholarship program was initially funded by the generous donations of friends, family,
undergraduate students, faculty members, Hofstra alumni and others. Much of the funding now
comes from the annual Friends of Max Kolb Telethon, a live television show produced by senior
level television students at Hofstra University each Spring. The yearly scholarship winners
are announced during the show itself.
The money raised from the telethon is the only source of funds for the Max Kolb Scholarship
fund. The film students who receive the scholarship are given checks to offset the production
costs of their junior or senior films. Previous winners, Liliana Candelario and Luis Servera,
have gone on to produce films that have aired on the Independent Film Channel.
The Selection Process:
The professor who is the Film Area coordinator and film instructors will make the
selections of students eligible for consideration.
The list of eligible students will be submitted to Financial and Academic Records
for certification of financial need when necessary.
Awards will be made based on available money from the endowment and the
number of eligible students.
Individual grant awards will vary depending on the level of course work of each winner.
Student recipients will receive their scholarship checks near the end of the semester.
A representative of the Kolb family will be contacted each year during the evaluation
process before awards and amounts are finalized.
